I think if we had worked out agreements for some appropriate degree of autonomy and revenue-sharing, we could still be British, and we would have done just fine. Freedom (in its various forms) was not a universal value throughout history. China has little, and they're on track to become the dominant world power. I still think it's the best choice, but it isn't the only one.
